Description
Alabama's biggest city isn't Birmingham anymore, and it isn't the capital either. By the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, it's Huntsville, at 233,627 people, and Birmingham has slid to third. In one lifetime, Huntsville went from a cotton town a twentieth the size of Birmingham to number one in Alabama. And on five things you probably believe about Alabama, Huntsville breaks every single one.
So I built a checklist, with a running tally every time Huntsville fails one. We get into the metro numbers every Birmingham fan will want to see, why Nashville and Chattanooga sit closer than the state capital, a river that carries Huntsville's rain through Tennessee and Kentucky before it ever reaches the Gulf, a town that went by Twickenham before it took John Hunt's name, and the cabinet shop where Alabama's first constitution was written.
Then the people and the paychecks: von Braun's rocket team arriving in 1950, Explorer One and the night thousands packed the courthouse square, Marshall Space Flight Center, the Saturn V test stand they turned to face Decatur, Space Camp, mill villages built with Massachusetts and Northeastern money, Lowe Mill, the Watercress Capital of the World, Cummings Research Park on old cotton fields, and aerospace engineers at 42 times the national concentration. Underneath all five sits one decision that explains the whole tally.
Is Huntsville Alabama to you, or not? Give me the one thing that settles it for you.
