Alabama Megaprojects That Are Going To Transform the State

There's a nuclear plant in Jackson County that cost more than five billion dollars and never made a single watt, and now it's being studied all over again. A lot of Alabama's biggest new projects are going up on ground the state already lost once: a coal plant that became a Google data center, a dead mall in Huntsville, an empty piece of land that finally landed an aluminum mill. So I drove it, stop by stop, from the Tennessee River to Mobile Bay. The stops: Bellefonte in Hollywood, Widows Creek, MidCity in Huntsville, the Birmingham Northern Beltline, Coca-Cola United on the old Stockham Valves site, Project Marvel in Bessemer, Mercedes in Vance and the Saban Center in Tuscaloosa, the new Alabama State House and Meta in Montgomery, Novelis in Bay Minette, the Calvert steel mill, the Port of Mobile, the Mobile River Bridge, and Regions Arena.
