Description
📖 Get The Old Gun Hand, fifty years at the gunsmith's bench, written down: https://ivansjournal.com
Go and look in your gun cleaning kit. If it looks like most, there's a bottle in there that half the internet swears is completely safe for bluing. The NRA Gunsmithing School documentation says it strips bluing in about thirty minutes.
I put eleven rust removers on my workbench and ran every one of them on guns with real heavy rust. Not surface bloom a dry rag fixes. Rust with teeth in it. By the end of the afternoon, eight of the eleven had stripped the bluing, done almost nothing, or managed both at once.
So nobody has to argue it in the comments, here is where I stand. I'm not guessing at any of this. The worst offenders are written up in the manufacturer's own purpose, in gunsmithing school paperwork, and in years of forum threads from owners who learned it the hard way. A Kimber .45 lost its finish to a leaking hot sauce packet in a range bag. Same acid as the vinegar soak people call gentle and natural.
And the thing that ties all eight failures together is simple once you hear it. Bluing is an iron oxide. Rust is a different iron oxide. Anything strong enough to take heavy rust off is strong enough to take the bluing with it if you give it the time, the concentration, or the scrubbing.
Only three methods came through without ruining what finish was left. One of them costs under twenty dollars and has been sitting in the same hardware store aisle for fifty years. The American Rifleman had it in print before I ran a single test.
What we go through:
Sandpaper, and why the scratches never buff out
CLR, and why a bathroom cleaner can't tell rust from bluing
Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust Remover, and what the word Blue actually means on that label
The white vinegar overnight soak, and the hot sauce packet that proves the point
Bar Keepers Friend, and where oxalic acid stops being gentle
The electrolysis rig, ferric oxide against magnetite, and the hydrogen gas nobody mentions
Naval Jelly, and the phosphoric acid it shares with a bluing stripper
Evaporust, chelation, and the product sheet every comment section needs to read
Flitz Metal Polish, and what an oil carrier does for an abrasive
Break-Free CLP with a brass brush, the slow method that keeps the finish
Kroil with 0000 steel wool, the one grade that belongs near a blued gun, and why the oil has to stay on the pad
Why pitted bluing was gone before you ever picked up a product
Said plainly on safety: never use a stainless steel anode for electrolysis, it throws off toxic hexavalent chromium. Run the rig outdoors or somewhere with real ventilation, because the process makes flammable hydrogen gas. And if the gun matters, read what's in the bottle before you open it.
There's no secret formula in any of this. The right answer here isn't the most technical option, and it isn't the one with the loudest comment section behind it. It's a can of penetrating oil, the correct grade of steel wool, and patience.
I've been putting this kind of hands-on owner judgment somewhere more permanent at ivansjournal.com. If that's useful to you, go take a look.
Tell me in the comments which method you've reached for on a rusty gun, and whether the bluing came through. And tell me this: what's sitting next to your cleaning kit right now from the failure column?
