Description
Hoatzin Bird: 120 Days From Egg To Survivor | Wild Birds
Deep in the flooded forests of the Amazon, a pair of Hoatzin birds begins an extraordinary journey to raise a family. After building a fragile nest above the river, the female lays two eggs while both parents take turns incubating and protecting them through heavy rain and changing weather.
When the eggs hatch, two weak chicks depend completely on their parents for warmth and softened plant food. This Hoatzin family faces constant danger when a green pit viper reaches the unguarded nest. Although the parents fight fiercely and drive the snake into the water, one injured chick does not survive.
The single remaining chick must overcome even greater challenges. During a powerful storm, it is blown from the nest and left hanging beneath it above the flooded river. Using its feet and the remarkable claws on its wings, the young bird slowly climbs back to safety.
Unlike most birds, the Hoatzin has a unique leaf-based diet and an unusual digestive system. As the surviving chick grows, its parents teach it how to choose tender leaves, balance on branches, and make its first awkward flights over the water.
The young Hoatzin gradually becomes stronger, learns to find food without help, and begins traveling farther from its parents. This Hoatzin documentary follows a powerful story of parental devotion, loss, survival, and independence in one of the wildest habitats on Earth.
