Description
In November 2013, Boeing unveiled the 777X at the Dubai Airshow and walked away with 259 orders worth more than $95 billion, the biggest product launch in commercial aviation history. Emirates and Lufthansa rebuilt their fleets around it, retiring older 777s and even turning away brand-new A380s to make room. By all logic, it should have been Boeing's next great success. Instead, dozens of finished 777Xs sit on the ground at Paine Field today, still in their green protective coating, years after they were built. And when Boeing offered them to Emirates and Lufthansa, both airlines flat-out refused, with Emirates' president saying the jets were only fit for storing baked beans.
In this video, I investigate how brand-new 777Xs became worthless before carrying a single passenger: from the automated riveting system Boeing abandoned after years of defects, to the hidden weight penalty that bleeds money on every flight, and why the launch customers are now turning down the very aircraft they waited more than a decade for.
