Description

Two fatal crashes in barely a year, Washington and LaGuardia, traced back to the same root cause: air traffic controllers stretched past their limit. And these are only the ones that made the news, while near misses and runway incursions now happen across the United States almost every single day. You'd assume the problem is money. But Washington has spent two decades and tens of billions of dollars trying to fix this, and the system is arguably in worse shape now than when the spending started. Even in 2026, major parts of it still run on Windows 95 and floppy disks, with technicians hunting eBay for obsolete parts to keep it alive. In this video, I investigate how one of the richest countries on earth ended up with its most fragile air traffic system: the 48-hour decision a president made in August 1981 that American aviation never recovered from, why the FAA still can't hire its way out, and whether handing the skies to a private company is the fix. 00:14 - America’s Air Traffic Crisis 02:57 - The Decision That Broke the System 05:30 - The Lasting Damage of the PATCO Strike 06:14 - America’s Controller Shortage 08:27 - Why the FAA Can’t Simply Hire More Controllers 10:47 - The Ancient Technology Running U.S. Airspace 14:06 - How America’s $36 Billion Upgrade Failed 15:52 - Could Privatization Fix American Air Traffic Control?
