Description

In 2023, NASA cancelled the X-57 Maxwell, the electric X-plane it had spent years and millions of dollars developing, before it ever left the ground. A few years earlier, Airbus shelved its own electric program in favor of hydrogen. Their conclusion was simple: the economics didn't exist, and the risks outweighed the benefits. By all logic, that should have been the end of the story. Then in August of this year, an aircraft weighing more than 25,000 pounds took off from upstate New York, flew for 27 minutes without burning a drop of fuel, and became the largest electric aircraft ever flown. It did it on $5 worth of electricity. In this video, I investigate how a startup barely eight years old built the world's largest electric plane when Airbus and NASA both walked away: the weight problem that killed every electric aircraft before it, the obscure safety rule that was the real engineering challenge, and how Heart made the ES-30 almost 50% cheaper to operate than a turboprop. 00:06 - The Electric Plane NASA and Airbus Gave Up On 02:19 - Why Electric Aircraft Keep Failing 04:32 - The Market Everyone Else Ignored 06:15 - Why Electric Motors Change the Economics 07:35 - Heart’s Ingenious Hybrid Solution 10:27 - The Battery Breakthrough Electric Flight Needs 11:44 - How a 40-Person Startup Beat the Giants 15:17 - Can the ES-30 Save Regional Aviation?
