Subscribe for DAILY Bodybuilding Videos! 🙌 Six-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates tells the story of his very first American photoshoot at Gold's Gym, and it perfectly shows why "The Shadow" never fit the typical bodybuilding mold. Coming from Birmingham, England, where he trained in a hardcore underground gym, Dorian walked into the Mecca of bodybuilding and was greeted with the standard Hollywood-style treatment: sunglasses, guys being sprayed with water bottles to fake sweat, and posed shots holding weights for the camera. Dorian's reaction was pure Yates. He flat out refused to wear sunglasses, telling his British photographer Chris Lund that he doesn't wear sunglasses where he's from, and that he wanted to lift real weights instead. His idea? Grab the 200 pound dumbbell sitting in the gym and do dumbbell rows while Chris captures the shot. Chris was skeptical and asked if he could even lift it. Dorian's answer: he could lift it, but he couldn't smile while doing it and couldn't hold it still while the photographer found the perfect angle. "Get the shot," he told him, and the shutter clicked. That 200 pound dumbbell row became his first cover of Flex magazine. When people later asked Dorian how the photoshoot went, his answer summed up his entire attitude toward the glamour side of the sport: it was miserable. No fake sweat, no posing with props, no Hollywood nonsense - just raw, heavy training and real weight in his hand. This story is a perfect example of the blood and guts mentality that made Dorian Yates the most dominant mass monster of the 1990s. While others played the part for the cameras, Dorian stayed true to the iron, the same uncompromising approach that carried him to six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles.
