Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler finally answers a question bodybuilding fans have wondered about for years: how strong was he really? In this clip from his conversation with Bradley Martyn, Bradley admits he remembers watching old videos of Jay incline benching 405 pounds like it was 225, and he was always curious what Jay's actual maxes would have been.
Jay's answer is jaw-dropping: 550 pounds for two reps on the flat bench. Bradley's reaction says it all - "that's insane," especially for a professional bodybuilder, an athlete who trains for size and symmetry rather than pure strength. But Jay adds important context: at that time he weighed around 300 pounds and it happened back in his early 20s, long before he became the four-time Sandow winner who dethroned Ronnie Coleman.
Then comes the part that separates a smart professional from a gym ego lifter. Jay explains that once bodybuilding started paying the bills, he never maxed out again. He simply didn't take the risk. When your body is your career and your income, one bad max attempt can mean a torn pec, a missed Olympia and years of setbacks. That mindset is a big reason Jay stayed at the top of the sport for so long.
It's a powerful reminder of what separates bodybuilding from powerlifting. The goal was never to prove how much you can lift for a single rep, it was to build the most complete, dense and balanced physique possible and protect it long enough to compete at the highest level. Jay Cutler's strength was a tool, not the goal, and he knew exactly when to stop chasing numbers.
