Description

In 1976, a U.S. Navy research vessel accidentally discovered a massive shark that science had never documented before. The creature was later named the megamouth shark, a fifteen-foot filter feeder with a bizarre silver-lined mouth and mysterious deep-water lifestyle. For years, scientists struggled to understand how such a huge animal could remain completely hidden from humanity. Tracking studies eventually revealed that it spends daylight hours around 150 metres deep before rising toward the surface at night to follow plankton. The megamouth discovery changed what we thought we knew about the ocean—and raised an unsettling question about what else might still be hiding in plain sight.
