Description

Built to Last — how the old farms kept pests out and much more : https://ezrakaine.com How do you get rid of mice for free? A five-gallon bucket, a soup can, a coat hanger and a spoon of peanut butter. That's this morning: twenty-three mice, one bucket, no snapped fingers, and not one dollar spent. My grandfather ran this same bucket trap in his corn crib. One winter morning he pulled forty-one mice out of a single nail keg, and I was there to see it. Mice move into houses, barns and sheds every fall when the cold comes. The hardware store sells you bait blocks, and that's the problem. A mouse that eats one crawls back into your wall to die, and you smell it for three weeks. Before that, your cat, the neighbor's dog or the barn owl catching mice for you can eat it, and the bait goes right along with it. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • How the bucket trap works, and why the can has to spin • Building one from junk in ten minutes, $0 • The bait mistake that leaves most bucket traps empty • Where to set it so it fills overnight • What to do with the mice in the morning • Why they come back two weeks after you catch twenty — and how to seal the gap for good • Keeping them out of the truck, the feed and the birdseed • Does a cat actually solve a mouse problem? Cleaning up safely: never sweep or vacuum mouse droppings dry. Dried droppings and urine can carry disease, including hantavirus from deer mice, and you catch it by breathing the dust. Wear gloves, open the windows for half an hour, soak the droppings and nest with disinfectant, wait five minutes, then wipe up with paper towels and bag it. Check a live trap every morning. Tell me in the comments: what's the strangest place you've found a mouse nest? Mine was inside a work boot in the shop. I found it with my foot. A can that spins and a wall with no gaps. That's the whole trick, and it always was. Next time: my grandfather's hand saw, so dull it wouldn't cut butter, and the three-dollar file that brought it back. #MouseTrap #BucketTrap #GetRidOfMice #PestControl #DIY #MiceInHouse #HumaneMouseTrap #Homesteading #OldWaysAreBest #RodentControl #SelfReliance #FallPrep
