Description
How the Influence of American Media, Shaped by Black Americans, Turned African Sentiments Against White People
Until recently, many Africans looked up to white people, or Europeans. We adopted their education system and inventions, believing they were ahead of us, and this didn’t bother us. The books we read growing up in the 1970s and 1980s rarely depicted Europeans as evil; instead, they portrayed them as innovators, altruistic, and tolerant. So, what changed?
The emergence of black Americans and the rise of social media have played significant roles in this transformation. As more Africans sought opportunities in the West, a new definition of racism began to take hold. Any statement that failed to praise black people was labelled as racist; having more whites than blacks in a setting became racism; more white students in schools became racism; even a preference for living among whites was viewed as racism. The definition of racism continued to broaden to include virtually everything.
The blame game also ensued—our leaders were said to be controlled by Western interests; the constitutions we created became viewed as tools of the evil white man. Anything negative was attributed to white people, who became scapegoats for our incompetence. This narrative was repeated so often that Generation Z and millennials found someone to blame for their lack of intelligence to compete or innovate.
In truth, Europeans are not the reason for our poverty; rather, they have contributed to our survival and improved our mortality rates. Our failures, without exception, are self-inflicted.
