Are Antarctic Feral Cats Becoming a New Wildcat Species?

Are Antarctic Feral Cats Becoming a New Wildcat Species? Somewhere near Antarctica, evolution may be turning ordinary house cats into a new kind of wild predator. A few cats were brought to the Kerguelen Islands during the 1950s to control rodents. Today, around 7,000 of their descendants may roam the main island, living entirely beyond human control. A small pest-control attempt has become one of the strangest cases of feralization in the world. Cats reproduce quickly, allowing seventy years to contain dozens of generations. Throughout that time, isolation and natural selection have acted on the same closed population. The changes are already beginning to show. ➽Consider subscribing: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI5RX1o0cE5SKwHWRj_GVqA?sub_confirmation=1 ➽Narrated By: Kevin Harries ➽Audio: YouTube Audio Library ➽Contact: [email protected] Copyright Disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976: Allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
