Description
The Western Roman Empire fell in 476.
But Rome itself did not disappear.
For nearly another thousand years, the Roman state continued to exist in the East, centered on the great city of Constantinople. Modern historians call this civilization the Byzantine Empire, but its people continued to call themselves Romans.
This documentary explores how the Eastern Roman Empire survived some of the greatest crises of the medieval world from Justinian's attempt to restore Roman power, to the devastating wars with the Sasanian Empire, the siege of Constantinople in 626, and the Arab conquests that transformed the Mediterranean.
We follow the empire through war, political upheaval, territorial losses, and cultural transformation, and examine how Constantinople remained at the center of Roman power for centuries.
From Justinian and Theodora to Heraclius and the final centuries of Constantinople, this is the story of how Rome changed and survived.
