Description
A sleepless night, a morning filled with caring for my son, and small joys found in simple autumn meals in Japan.
This is an honest look at an ordinary day in the life of a 50-year-old woman living in Japan.
Hello, I’m Mayu.
Today was a physically tiring day.
As I slowly found my way back to myself,
I found the energy to think, “Somehow, I’ll make it through tomorrow, too!”
How do you spend the days when you’re tired?
Thank you for spending this day with me.

🍳 Recipes
Mushroom Takikomi Gohan (Japanese seasoned rice) | 4 rice-cooker cups
Maitake, enoki, shiitake mushrooms, and carrot
300 ml dashi stock made with kombu, niboshi (small dried sardines), and dried shiitake
4 tbsp each soy sauce and mirin
Water, as needed
1. Cut the mushrooms and carrot, then lightly season them with soy sauce.
2. Combine the dashi, soy sauce, and mirin, and add the mixture to the rinsed rice.
3. Place the mushrooms and carrot on top, then cook as usual. Add a little water if needed.
Steamed Sweet Potatoes
1. Slice the sweet potato into rounds and soak in water for a few minutes.
2. Poke holes in the steamer liner so the steam can pass through and water won’t collect.
3. Steam for about 15 minutes, until tender and fluffy.
Grilled Saury with Grated Daikon
Grill the saury (cut it in half if it doesn’t fit in your grill) and serve with grated daikon and kabosu, a Japanese citrus fruit.
Side Dishes
Boiled water spinach and bean sprouts dressed with vinegar and soy sauce
Clear soup with eggplant and wakame, seasoned with dashi and soy sauce
