Description
On the night of October 8, 1871, three fires broke out across the American Midwest at once. Everyone remembers the Great Chicago Fire. Almost no one remembers Peshtigo, Wisconsin — the deadliest wildfire in American history, which killed several times more people than Chicago on the very same night. And almost no one remembers the Great Michigan Fire, burning at the same hour across the state line.
This is the story of that single catastrophic night, told through two real eyewitnesses: Chicago real estate partner Lyman Baird, who walked toward the burning Cook County Courthouse to try to save the paper records proving who owned the city's land, and Father Peter Pernin, a Catholic priest who survived Peshtigo by standing in a river for over five hours as the fire consumed the town around him.
We trace the drought and storm system that set up all three fires, the destruction of Chicago's legal property records and the emergency Burnt Records Act that followed, and why Peshtigo — despite being deadlier than Chicago — nearly vanished from American memory entirely.
