Description

Canada had no tank manufacturing facilities in 1939. By the end of 1945, the total number of armored fighting vehicles produced by the Canadian industry was more than the total number produced by Italy and Japan. Automobile factories and locomotive units nationwide became massive factories of tanks, self-propelled cannons, armored reconnaissance cars and troop carriers for the Allied armies around the world. This video provides an overview of the entire range of Canadian designed and manufactured WWII armoured fighting vehicles: Canadian engineering was fast to respond to the realities of the battlefield—and from the Montreal-built Ram tank to the Grizzly cruiser, to the deadly 25 pounder Sexton self-propelled gun, it did so with impressive speed. The Ram gun tank was rendered redundant by changes in doctrine and was converted into Ram Kangaroos, the world's first operational heavy tracked armored personnel carriers, radically altering the tactics of mechanized infantry under Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds in Operation Totalize. We also discuss variants of the workhorse Universal Carrier, the fearsome Wasp and Badger flamethrowers, the 4-gun Skink anti-aircraft vehicle, the agile Fox, Otter and Lynx reconnaissance vehicles, and the 800,000 Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) vehicles that moved Allied armies.
