Description

Britain lost India in 1776. In 1777, it sent the Royal Navy to take it back. Part 2 of the East India Company story. Bengal is independent, the Company's own army is now the government, and the new country has no navy, no allies, no legal existence, and one very well-paid army. So Britain doesn't invade. Britain does something worse. It blockades. Bengal makes the finest cloth on the planet. British ships carry it. British brokers sell it. Cut out the middle and the richest province in Asia is left with a customer list of one — itself. Warehouses full, docks empty, fourteen months of payroll in the treasury, and nobody firing a shot. Then Warren Hastings works out what nobody else has: this entire country was founded on one repeatable trick. At Plassey, Robert Clive didn't beat Bengal's army. He paid its commander to stand on a hill and do nothing. Fifty thousand men made irrelevant before breakfast, for money. So Hastings goes to Clive's colonels, quietly, one at a time, with the full financial authority of the British Crown behind him. Full pardon. Back pay in London coin. A seat on the restored board. Every single one says no. This is the episode where the trick stops working — and where Clive realises it still works perfectly, as long as you point it at somebody else. ▶️ Start with Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMv7tjoX63U ▶️ Part 3: 📜 Covered in this video: The Royal Navy blockade of Calcutta, and how a trade siege kills a country without a single battle Lord North fighting two rebellions on opposite sides of the planet at the same time Warren Hastings' attempt to buy the Bengal Army back for Britain Why the Plassey bribe worked in 1757 and failed in 1778 The Maratha Confederacy, Mahadji Shinde, and the most expensive quiet border in Asia Clive renting an army instead of fighting one France recognising Bengal in the same session it recognised the United States The Treaty of Calcutta, 1780 What a hundred thousand soldiers do once the war they were fighting ends No cannons win this one. Just ledgers, leverage, and a flag nobody can agree on. Real: the Company's 1772 bankruptcy, the First Anglo-Maratha War, France's February 1778 recognition of the American colonies, and the fact that the Marathas were the strongest military power on the subcontinent. Invented: one broken mast, and everything downstream of it.
