When the Texas grid failed in February 2021, more than 4.5 million people lost power, some for up to 4 days. The state's final count was 246 deaths, 158 of them from hypothermia and 19 from carbon monoxide, while more than 1,400 people were reported treated for CO poisoning. A resting adult gives off about 100 watts of heat, and a $29.97 dome tent cuts the air a family has to warm by roughly three quarters. The Army's cold weather handbook has rules for this, and most households have never read them.

In this video, we talk about the 9 supplies that make a one-room winter plan work when the heat stops, including a dome tent pitched indoors, a battery carbon monoxide alarm and its 40-degree limit, an indoor-rated propane heater and its 9-square-inch fresh air rule, moving blankets to seal the doorway, reflective foil and the air-gap rule for windows, wool layers and the Army's COLD rule, the foam pad and rated sleeping bag system, a $6 hot water bottle, and the thermometer that tells you when to leave.
Subscribe if you want your house ready before the next hard freeze.
