Description

Don Brown made his fortune selling the grid that holds up drop ceilings. Then he built himself a 38,000-square-foot house on Lake Erie in Vermilion, Ohio, and put a drop ceiling in exactly one room of it. In 2011 his family listed Waterwood at $19.5 million, by Lake Erie Living's count the highest-priced house in the state. It has its own turning lane off U.S. Route 6, a helicopter pad, a dining room floor that spins at the push of a button, and a seating floor that rises 30 feet and lifts the glass dome overhead. Boaters out on the lake call it the castle. Nobody from outside the family would buy it, and three years later it went for $3.8 million to Brown's own son. This is how Brown built it, the architect he fired, what the rumors about tunnels and attack dogs got wrong, and who actually called when it went on the market. Then there's the land underneath it, and what it's turning into now. If you'd had $19.5 million to spend in 2011, would you have bought Waterwood?
