Description
The ten most beautiful Ohio Appalachian towns you should move to, and the honest trade each one asks of you, down to the nearest hospital.
Everyone will tell you Ohio is flat. Corn to the horizon, straight roads, nothing worth slowing down for. Drive south and east toward the Ohio River and the ground starts to buckle. The land folds into steep green hills, sandstone cliffs rise out of the forest, and rivers cut deep valleys past towns that stood here before Ohio was a state. This is Appalachian Ohio, the worn western foot of the mountains, and some of it is as lovely as anything in the country.
This countdown covers ten of those towns, from a dot on the map hiding the largest natural stone bridge in the state to the old river city at number one that might be the loveliest in the whole Midwest. In between: a coal era Main Street of two story wooden storefronts nobody had the money to tear down. A river town stacked so steeply up a hillside that its courthouse has a ground floor entrance on all three levels. A county seat with an 1892 opera house and one of the last hand operated river locks in America. The oldest continuously running Memorial Day parade in the United States. A town founded by five hundred French settlers fleeing the Revolution. Streets paved in star stamped brick that helped pave cities across the country. The oldest university in the old Northwest Territory. And the gateway to the Hocking Hills, with Old Man's Cave and Ash Cave a few minutes out of town.
Every entry gets the honest note. How far the hospital is, what the storefronts look like, whether the weekends get crowded. These are real places to build a life, not postcards, and the drive to the grocery store is part of the price.
