Description

To your face, an Amish person will almost always call you English. Behind closed doors, speaking Pennsylvania Dutch among their own family, many use a different term entirely: Hoch Leut — the high people. And when someone leaves the faith for mainstream American life, the Amish don't say they left. They say the person has "gone hoch." Two different names for the same people, used depending entirely on who's in the room. In this video, we go beyond the stereotypes — either saintly and welcoming or closed and suspicious — to look at what this relationship actually looks like day to day. We'll explore: - Where the word "English" actually comes from, and why it has nothing to do with England - The scripture behind Amish separation, and what "in the world but not of it" really means in practice - The decades-long friendships built with English drivers, customers, and business partners - What happens to the line between Amish and English the moment disaster strikes - Why the Amish don't actively evangelize, and what that reveals about how they see the wider world - Why the honest answer depends entirely on which Amish person — and which English person — you're asking about If you've only ever seen the tourist version of this relationship, this episode goes into the real, complicated, surprisingly warm reality underneath it. If you're new here, this channel goes deep into the real Amish world — the parts no tourist brochure or reality show could ever fully explain. New videos every week.
