Description

In 2005, psychologist Ed Diener — one of the most cited happiness researchers in the world — set out to answer a specific question: without electricity, cars, or a college degree, are the Amish actually happier than everyone else? His team surveyed Old Order Amish communities alongside Inuit hunters in Greenland and Maasai herders in Kenya, and found all three reported genuinely high, stable life satisfaction. But buried inside that finding was something stranger — the Amish reported unusually low satisfaction with anything tied to the self, even while reporting unusually high satisfaction with their relationships and sense of belonging. We'll explore: - What the 2005 happiness study actually found, and what it didn't - Why suffering and hardship are treated as meaningful, not as problems to be engineered away - The real markers of a good life in Amish culture — a full house, land passed down intact, a reputation for reliability - Why individual achievement, leisure, and personal recognition are deliberately left off the list entirely - The honest trade-off underneath even the most positive research findings on Amish wellbeing This isn't a simple story about a happier way of life. It's a genuinely different definition of what a good life is even for — and an honest look at what that definition costs the people living inside it. If you're new here, this channel goes deep into the real Amish world — the parts no postcard or headline ever fully explains. New videos every week.
