Description
In this video, I completely disassemble the indoor heads of a mini-split heat pump, to access the heat exchanger and squirrel cage fan to give them a professional deep-cleaning.
Even though mini-split indoor units have built-in air filters, those filters don’t catch everything. Over time, fine dust, dirt, and other airborne particles can build up on the heat exchanger and fan.
This buildup restricts airflow and can cause the indoor head to lose efficiency, making the heat pump work harder to deliver the same amount of heating or cooling.
For most homes, it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean the indoor heads about every two years. If your home is particularly dusty or you have indoor smoke from wood stoves, fireplaces, cooking, or other sources, you may need to clean them more frequently.
I’ll show you what accumulates inside these units, how I take the indoor head apart, and how I clean the components so the system can operate efficiently.
⚠️ Safety note: Working on a mini-split involves electrical components and delicate parts. TURN OFF POWER to the unit before cleaning or disassembly, and only perform work you’re comfortable doing safely.
