Description
Built to Last — everything my family kept, written down: https://ezrakaine.com
How do you sharpen a hand saw? With a three-dollar file and about twenty minutes. This saw
is older than my father. Last week it took forty-one strokes to get through a pine
two-by-four, and it wandered off the line the whole way. This morning, after one file and
twenty minutes, it took eleven strokes, and I barely pushed. It cuts like the day he bought
it.
Walk into any home center and there's a wall of new hand saws at twenty-five dollars, each
one stickered "hardened teeth, stays sharp longer." What the sticker leaves out is that
those teeth are too hard for a file to touch. When they go dull, the saw is garbage and you
buy another. Meanwhile every farm sale has a box of old saws at two dollars apiece, made from
steel meant to be sharpened a hundred times. Nobody wants them because they're dull.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
• The five-second file test that tells you if a saw is worth saving
• Rip saw vs crosscut saw, and how to tell which one you've got
• What you need: one triangle file, two boards and a clamp
• Jointing the teeth so every one is the same height
• The filing stroke, tooth by tooth, and the sign that tells you exactly when to stop
• Saw set: the one thing people forget that makes a sharp saw bind anyway
• Five ways to ruin a good saw
• Keeping it sharp, and what to do if the blade is bent
Tell me in the comments: what's the oldest tool you still use every week? I'll bet somebody
out there has something older than 1928.
File till the shine is gone. Then get out of the saw's way.
