Description

Ancient Egyptian Coffins Discovered at Saqqara! In January 2021, archaeologists working at Saqqara, one of ancient Egypt’s most important burial grounds, announced an extraordinary discovery: more than 50 ancient wooden coffins, some dating back approximately 3,000 years. The discovery was made by an Egyptian archaeological mission led by Dr. Zahi Hawass, near the pyramid of Queen Naert, wife of King Teti, a ruler of Egypt’s Sixth Dynasty. The coffins were discovered in burial shafts, some reaching depths of approximately 10 to 12 meters beneath the desert surface. Many were decorated with elaborate paintings, hieroglyphic inscriptions and representations of human faces, reflecting ancient Egyptian beliefs about death, resurrection and the journey into the afterlife. The excavations also uncovered funerary objects, statues, wooden models and other artifacts that provide valuable information about the religious practices and daily lives of ancient Egyptians. Among the discoveries was a remarkable papyrus containing passages from the Book of the Dead, a collection of funerary spells intended to guide and protect the deceased in the afterlife. Although the nearby pyramid complex dates to the Old Kingdom, many of the newly discovered burials belonged to later periods of Egyptian history, demonstrating how Saqqara continued to serve as a sacred burial ground for thousands of years. Saqqara was the principal necropolis of ancient Memphis, one of Egypt’s most important cities. It is also home to the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser, built during the Third Dynasty around the 27th century BCE. The discoveries of 2021 revealed another extraordinary chapter in the long history of this ancient cemetery.
