Description
In July 2019, paleontologists working at Angeac-Charente in southwestern France uncovered an extraordinary fossil: an enormous dinosaur thigh bone measuring approximately two meters in length and weighing around 500 kilograms.
The remarkable discovery was made at one of Europe’s most productive dinosaur excavation sites, an ancient landscape that preserves evidence of life during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 140 million years ago.
The massive femur belonged to a sauropod, a group of gigantic, long-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs that included some of the largest land animals ever to exist.
These prehistoric giants possessed enormous bodies, long tails and powerful legs capable of supporting their extraordinary weight.
Some sauropods reached lengths exceeding 25 meters and weighed many tens of tonnes, although the exact size and species of the animal represented by this particular fossil remain uncertain.
The discovery was especially remarkable because the bone was exceptionally well preserved, despite having remained buried for more than 100 million years.
Excavating such an enormous fossil requires extraordinary care. Paleontologists must gradually remove the surrounding sediment, stabilize fragile sections and carefully prepare the specimen for transportation and scientific study.
The Angeac-Charente site has produced thousands of fossils, including dinosaur bones, teeth, turtle remains, crocodile fossils and evidence of ancient plants.
Together, these discoveries reveal an ecosystem dramatically different from the landscapes of modern France.
During the Early Cretaceous, this region was home to enormous herbivorous dinosaurs, predators and a remarkable diversity of prehistoric wildlife.
More than 140 million years later, a single fossilized bone offers scientists valuable clues about the anatomy, size and evolution of these extraordinary animals.
Can you imagine encountering a living dinosaur large enough to possess a two-meter-long thigh bone?
