Description

In 2014, archaeologists made one of the most extraordinary discoveries in modern Greek archaeology when they excavated a monumental Macedonian tomb beneath the Kasta burial mound at Amphipolis in northern Greece. Dating to the late 4th century BCE, the monument was constructed during the turbulent period surrounding the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE and the struggles between his successors. The tomb’s enormous burial mound, approximately 158 meters in diameter, was surrounded by a monumental marble enclosure nearly 500 meters long. Its entrance was guarded by two impressive marble sphinxes, while deeper inside stood two magnificent female statues known as caryatids. One of the most remarkable discoveries was an elaborate pebble mosaic depicting the abduction of Persephone by Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. The scene was particularly appropriate for a funerary monument, reflecting ancient Greek beliefs about death and the afterlife. Archaeologists also discovered human skeletal remains belonging to several individuals, suggesting that the monument had a more complex burial history than initially expected. The identity of the person for whom the tomb was originally constructed remains uncertain. Some researchers have proposed connections to members of Alexander the Great’s family or important figures from the Macedonian royal court. However, no definitive archaeological evidence has established the identity of its principal occupant. Amphipolis was an important Macedonian city during Alexander’s reign, and the monument’s extraordinary scale suggests that it was built for someone of considerable wealth and status. More than 2,300 years later, the Kasta Tomb remains one of the most fascinating archaeological mysteries associated with ancient Macedonia.
