Description
Why are there no king bees? This science documentary explains honey bee biology. The queen bee, worker bees, and drones, and why every bee that ever stung you was female. 150,000 species, zero kings.
A male honey bee cannot sting you. Not because he is gentle, but because a bee's stinger is a rebuilt ovipositor. The tube a female insect lays eggs with. He cannot make wax, carry pollen, or feed a larva either. And he has no father at all: drones hatch from unfertilised eggs and carry 16 chromosomes to a worker's 32. He mates once, in mid-air, and his abdomen ruptures as he does it. Fewer than 1 in 100 drones ever reach a queen. The rest get dragged out of the hive in autumn and left to starve on the doorstep.
In this video, we trace 2,000 years of getting the beehive wrong. From Aristotle and Virgil, who opened a hive and saw a king, to Charles Butler's The Feminine Monarchie in 1609, to Jan Dzierzon working out haplodiploidy in 1845, sixty years before science knew sex chromosomes existed. We cover the csd sex gene and its 4,950+ possible allele combinations; Jerzy Woyke's glass observation hives, where workers were caught eating diploid drone larvae alive; worker policing and the queen who is starved and shaken by her own daughters; the Cape honey bee clone lineage that has been emptying colonies across South Africa since 1990, and the social insects that really do have kings: termites, naked mole-rats, and one tiny ant with sabre-shaped jaws.
Why don't bees have a king? What is a drone bee actually for? Why can only female bees sting? Do termites have a king, and why do they, when honey bees never will? And if the beehive has been a mirror of human politics for two millennia, what does today's "honeybee democracy" quietly say about us?
