Description
In this video, I replace the muffler and intermediate pipe on a 2006 Mazda 5. Overall, the installation went smoothly, but one critical exhaust joint developed a leak during the final test.
After some troubleshooting, I discovered the cause: the two pipes being joined were slightly different diameters. Even though they looked close in size, they weren't an exact match. Tightening the exhaust clamp as much as possible still wasn't enough to create a proper seal.
The fix turned out to be simple once the real problem was identified. I installed the correct exhaust pipe adapter, designed to fit both pipe sizes, which created a tight, leak-free connection. I show the diagnosis, the repair, and the final result in detail.
If you're replacing exhaust components and run into a stubborn leak at a pipe joint, especially when using aftermarket parts, this video may save you time and frustration by helping you identify when mismatched pipe sizes are the real issue.
