Without power you don't heat a house. You heat one room, and then the people in it. In the February 2021 freeze it hit 7 degrees in Austin, some Texas homes went four days without power, and 158 Texans died of the cold while 19 died of carbon monoxide from the fixes people tried. Doug's room that week was the one with the fireplace, every other door shut and a wool blanket over the hall doorway. The bags they owned said 40 degrees, and the thermometer read 48 the second morning.

In this video, we talk about 25 cheap ways to heat one room without electricity, including picking the room and shutting every other door, a wool blanket over an open doorway, window shrink film, bubble wrap and cardboard on the glass, a rug on a bare floor, the fireplace damper, hot water bottles and a thermos filled outdoors, hand warmers used as printed, wool instead of cotton, a ground pad, the poncho liner, a sleeping bag rated for your coldest night, an $8 thermometer, what he keeps off his list, and the fireplace run right with seasoned wood and three carbon monoxide alarms.
