Lake Ontario | A Satirical Love Song About Trump’s “Lake America” Renaming

Lake Ontario becomes the unlikely subject of a love song—and political satire—after Donald Trump’s executive order renamed it “Lake America” for U.S. federal use. “Lake Ontario” celebrates the Great Lake’s ancient origins, Indigenous history, the name Kanadario (“sparkling water”), centuries of history, canoes, schooners, Kingston and Sackets Harbor, while contrasting that legacy with Trump’s 2026 Lake America renaming order. Warm, soulful and playful, this satirical protest song asks whether a presidential decree can really overwrite nearly four centuries of recorded history—and answers with one stubborn refrain: Ontario, Ontario. And in the spirit of international geographic diplomacy, Canada gets one imaginary rename of its own: goodbye Mar-a-Lago, hello Mar-a-Lardo.
