Description

James Oberg spent more than twenty years in NASA's Mission Control and planned the orbit for the first flight that built the station. Afterwards he wrote that it had come closer to disaster than at any time in its nearly 25 years in orbit. This video follows the station through everything since. It covers the blue screen on the ISS live feed and what NASA says causes it, and the 1998 Zarya module that refused ground commands on its launch day. It covers the 2023 power failure that cut Houston off from its commands, data and voice line. Then the cracked tunnel on the Russian segment, rated at the top of NASA's risk scale, the leak that stopped at the start of 2026 and didn't stay stopped, and the June 2026 order that sent five astronauts into the SpaceX Dragon. Then there are the two clocks. NASA says its ageing relay satellite network faces a growing risk to continuous service between 2029 and 2031. The station itself has to be brought down under control after 2030. And there is one sentence Oberg wrote in 2021 that still fits all of it.
