Description
High on the western edge of Jerusalem, the city's largest cemetery—Har HaMenuchot—holds nearly a quarter of a million graves, and it is running out of surface land. Expanding outward meant cutting into protected hillside space, while building above-ground towers clashed with both land limits and traditional burial customs. So engineers took a radical path: they went 160 feet (50 meters) straight into the heart of the mountain.
In this documentary, we break down the extreme subterranean civil and mining engineering behind Jerusalem’s $77 million underground necropolis. Discover how engineers achieved five times the surface density (up to 6,000 spaces per acre), why crews relied on heavy tracked roadheaders instead of full-scale blasting to avoid sending seismic shockwaves into the fragile graves overhead, how rock bolts and reinforced shotcrete hold up 52-foot-tall arched caverns in fractured dolomitic limestone, and the clever "top-down" bench excavation method that allowed machines to drill multi-story walls without towering scaffolding.
Subscribe to Grand Structures for deep dives into extreme civil engineering, architectural physics, and hidden megaprojects.
