Description

In the last 5 or so years, we have seen a surge in systemic and corporate antagonists used in mainstream media. Vought International in The Boys, both the patriarchy and Mattel in the Barbie movie, Bash in Dont Look Up, numerous examples in Black Mirror, the list goes on and on. People are fed up with deeply rooted societal issues, so writers have turned to their stories as a way to get back at the real life antagonists. And its working. Financially, at least. The examples I provided are all projects that had massive returns, collecting billions of dollars in revenue between them. But what about in terms of just writing good stories? Not so great. To tell effective stories, we have to tell nuanced stories. We can’t just preach. We have to explore the bigger picture. We have to show. Yet it seems like none of these anti corporation stories will dare to do that. Which is where Common Side Effects comes in. #commonsideeffects #barbie #blackmirror #writingadvice
