I'm 65 now, and I'm from a small town in east Texas you've never heard of, oil country, cattle country, the kind of place where everybody knows everybody and nothing much changes. I worked the oil fields most of my life, a roughneck and then later a supervisor, hard physical work out in the heat and the wind for close to forty years. It's a brutal way to make a living but it paid decent when the oil was flowing, and I never knew anything else. I married my high school sweetheart, Brenda, when I was twenty-two, and we built what I thought was a whole life together. Raised two kids, both grown and gone with families of their own now. Bought a house, filled it up with thirty-seven years of stuff. And I thought, right up until nearly the end, that we were solid. That we'd grow old together on the porch like we always said we would.
