Description
Malaysia isn't a country so much as a seam.
Two ancient continents collided here around 250 million years ago and welded together, and the join still runs north to south down the middle of the peninsula. The rocks on either side of it don't match, because they were on separate landmasses before the impact.
That collision produced a granite spine. The equator then spent millions of years rotting that granite, releasing the tin inside it into riverbeds where anyone with a pan could recover it — which is why this became the richest tin province on Earth. The same climate grew a rainforest that has been running continuously since the dinosaurs, and created the one growing band where a South American tree and a West African palm would both outproduce their own homelands.
And when the ice melted, the drowned shelf left behind a channel that a quarter of global trade now cannot go around.
None of it was planned. It just happened to receive three separate gifts the industrial world couldn't function without, and then happened to sit across the shortest sea route between Europe and China.
