Description

In 1972, Al Pacino spent three hours barely raising his voice. Twenty years later he won an Academy Award for shouting. People have been arguing about which one is the real Pacino ever since. He grew up in the South Bronx, dropped out at seventeen, and spent years working as a janitor and sorting mail while studying acting at night. When Francis Ford Coppola wanted him for The Godfather, Paramount refused — they wanted a star, not an unknown. Coppola pushed until he nearly got himself fired over it. In this video, we look at what Hollywood legends and fellow actors have said about Al Pacino — the quiet, controlled work of the seventies, the enormous performances that followed, and the argument about whether he ever stopped acting and started performing. There's also the story of Scarface. It flopped. Critics hated it, Hollywood dismissed it, and it should have disappeared. What kept it alive was hip-hop — a generation of artists who recognized Tony Montana instantly, put him on their records, and turned a failed gangster picture into one of the most quoted films ever made. Pacino has said that's the only reason anyone still watches it. Eight Oscar nominations before he finally won, and the one he took home was for the loudest thing he ever did.
