Are curses real, or can believing in a curse be powerful enough to make it feel real?
For thousands of years, people have feared curses, hexes and supernatural punishment. From ancient Mesopotamian rituals and Roman curse tablets to protective symbols hidden inside old British buildings, the fear of being cursed appears again and again throughout human history.
But perhaps the most famous curse of all began in 1922, when Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun.
After Lord Carnarvon died only months later, newspapers claimed the Pharaoh’s Curse had begun. More deaths followed, and one of history’s most enduring supernatural legends was born.
But was there really a curse?
Tonight on Bedtime Myths and Mysteries, we explore the dark history of curses, the strange rituals people used to protect themselves, the legend of King Tutankhamun’s curse, and the psychology that may explain why a curse can seem frighteningly real.
Because perhaps a curse does not need supernatural power.
Perhaps it only needs someone who believes in it.
