When the furnace quits on a cold night, most folks reach for the phone and wait on a repairman. My people reached for what they had on hand.
In this one I count down eleven things off the dollar store shelves that will keep you warm when the heat goes out. Most of them run about a dollar and a quarter, and all eleven come in under fifteen dollars. Behind each one is the old habit it stands in for. That means my Papaw’s sawdust door log, Mamaw’s beans put to bed in a box of quilts, and the warm rocks and flatirons they slid under the covers.
One of the eleven has nothing to do with heat at all, and it may matter more than any of them. I also tell you plainly where these things fall short, and the safety rules you do not skip. If you burn anything inside, you need a carbon monoxide alarm.
Number one is the thing my Papaw did every hard winter of his life. He taught it to me by a cold doorway when I was ten.
My name is Arlie Caudill. I am sixty-five, and I was raised up a holler in Letcher County, Kentucky. I am handing down what was handed to me. The whole of it is in my book at arliecaudill.com.
Tell me in the comments what county you are in and how old your house is.
