Description
It's cake made with real tomato soup and a New York grocer was already selling "Campbell's Tomato Soup Cake" in 1930, ten years before Campbell's ever published a recipe.
I'm recreating this forgotten tomato soup cake recipe from 1935 and investigating the real food history behind the name.
In this episode, I trace dozens of newspaper clippings and ads to show what the documents actually say. I found that Campbell's Tomato Soup Cake was in grocery stores and community recipes as just "a can of tomato soup" long before Campbell's printed their version. No logo. No sponsorship. Just a very confident grocer who knew a famous name sells cake.
Furthermore, mixing the acidic tomatoes with the base, baking soda, is simply basic baking science that had been around since 1876. There is no evidence that this is a thrift recipe of the depression. It's from the depression era, but you'll see from the ingredients that nothing is left out or stretched to make-do.
