📕 The Aussie Car Buyer's Bible — the 3 history checks I'd run before you hand over a cent 👉 https://aussiemechanicgreg.com
Three thousand dollars for a headlight, because it is an LED and you cannot replace the globe. Add a cracked bumper with radar behind it, the recalibration that repair triggers, and three weeks of hire car while the part ships, and a car-park bump becomes a $15,000 quote on a ute worth $22,000. Nobody decides anything — a number crosses another number and a letter arrives.
So I went through how that decision is actually made. It is a published formula with three numbers in it, and two of them are yours. Then the part the headlines get backwards: the utes most easily written off here are not the expensive ones, they are the cheap paid-off ones, because value is the number the repair bill has to beat. And the five that survive a claim, named, with the reason.
What I cover:
- The write-off formula, word for word: repair cost + salvage vs market or insured value
- Which of those numbers you control, and the one line on your policy that decides it years before the accident
- Statutory vs repairable write-off, and what a register record does to a vehicle forever
- Why the repair side exploded: average repair time 38.57 days in 2019 → 61.25 in 2024, parts out to 22 weeks
- The hire-car clause on your policy that quietly pushes your ute toward the scrap column, and what ADAS recalibration costs
- The five utes that survive a claim — and the one-phone-call test you can run on any ute before you buy
- The five things that make a ute easy to write off: sensors in the crush zone, low market value, a thin parts pipeline, replace-only panels, market-value cover
FACT-CHECK: A repairable write-off is a total loss where repair cost to required safety and roadworthiness standards, plus salvage, exceeds the vehicle's market or insured value. A statutory write-off may never be re-registered anywhere in Australia; published triggers include structural damage at steering or suspension mounting points, heat or fire damage affecting structural integrity, saltwater immersion above floor level, a bent or cracked chassis and major rollover crush damage. Vehicles of 4.5t GVM or less and 15 years or younger assessed as a total loss go on the national Written-Off Vehicle Register; a repairable write-off can return to the road after a state re-inspection, and a Queensland inquiry submission states NSW is the only state with a statutory-write-off-only category. Insurance Council of Australia figures put average repair time at 38.57 days in 2019 and 61.25 in 2024. MTAA executive director Bruce Billson has said some parts run to 22 weeks and independent repairers wait over four months for panels, and is quoted: "if your comprehensive policy includes a rental car hire while you wait for a repair, you may just find your car gets written off instead." Tom Horne of Castle Automotive, Sydney, is quoted: "It can now cost $3000 for a smashed headlight because it's an LED and you can't just replace the globe." ADAS recalibration is required after repair of the panel carrying the radar, after windscreen replacement and after suspension or chassis work that may alter geometry; indicative costs are $150–$400 on top of a windscreen, $150–$600 per system, front radar $250–$450+, blind-spot and cross-traffic $200–$400+, and several damaged sensors can pass $1,000. Post-repair inspection falls under AS 5732:2022. ABC News reported on 10 August 2026 that premiums rose 8% in the year to July 2025 and over 42% between 2019 and 2024; ASIC Commissioner Alan Kirkland said car insurance was "the most complained about insurance product in 2024-25" and that insurers "tell us there are a range of reasons for these significant increases, but the problem is they're not explaining" — ASIC reviewed five insurers across eight brands, nearly three-quarters of the market. Allianz, in the same report, cited "rising repair and replacement costs, including parts, labour, supply chain pressures and severe weather". 2026 ute sales: Ranger 33,694 and HiLux 32,270 year to date; D-Max 12,908 (−8.2%) and Triton 10,351 (+12.2%) in the first half, with the 4x4 ute segment down 11.1% to 96,153.
DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT insurance, legal, financial or purchasing advice, and not advice about your policy or your vehicle. No insurer, assessor, repairer, dealer or manufacturer is accused of any wrongdoing; ASIC's published criticism concerned the explanation of premium increases, not write-off conduct, and nothing here says any vehicle was written off improperly. Vehicles are discussed by type of repair and parts availability, not by quality. Costs and valuations are indicative and vary widely. Write-off categories, re-registration and inspection rules differ by state and change — check with your own road authority, and read your product disclosure statement for what your policy actually covers.
