Description
📕 Make It Last — the towing and load chapter, so you know what your ute can actually carry 👉 https://aussiemechanicgreg.com
A camper that weighs 822kg empty, going onto a ute allowed to carry 1,065kg. Sounds fine — until you add the tray, the bar, the water, the spare and the two of you, and the camper is about 300kg heavier than the vehicle may legally carry. Nobody lied to anybody. A slide-on simply does not use your tow capacity at all: it spends your payload, and payload is the one number nobody checks.
So I went through seven slide-on and canopy campers Australians are bolting onto trays right now, with the published weights and prices, and sorted them into the three I'd happily put my own gear in and the four I'd want answers about first. No brand here is rubbish — four are conditional, and I say exactly what the condition is.
What I cover:
- The four-minute job that gives you your real payload — and why using TARE instead of KERB flatters you by most of a tank of diesel
- The 740kg of tray, bar, batteries, water, spare and people gone before the camper arrives
- Trayon: 390–410kg, Queensland-built since 1994, Australian Made, 10-year warranty — and the one figure they publish that almost nobody else does
- The imported American hard-side (822kg dry up to 2,049kg wet) and why the fault is the ute underneath it, not the camper
- Wedgetail: 580kg gross tare on the 22, Newcastle-built since 2008 — and why I still want a weighbridge ticket
- The plumbed heavy box, the canopy conversion's hidden stack, and the "empty" tipper with 360kg left out of 920kg
- The second-hand slide-on, and the legal gap that means its loaded weight need not be written anywhere on it
- Rear overhang, load restraint, pre-rego vs post-rego GVM upgrades — and what neither one fixes
FACT-CHECK: A slide-on loads the vehicle's payload, not its tow capacity. Payload = GVM minus kerb; 4X4 Australia defines tare as fluids topped up except fuel at just 10 litres, no occupants or accessories, while kerb is full-tank and ready to drive. A typical modern dual-cab runs about 3,200kg GVM against a 2,300kg kerb — roughly 900kg payload; most utes sit 600–1,200kg, the highest being Mazda BT-50 TF XT 1,095kg, Mitsubishi Triton MV GLX 1,075kg, Isuzu D-Max RG SX 1,065kg. Outback Travel Australia's worked example adds about 740kg before any camper (spare 40kg, alloy tray 100kg, winch bar 50kg, second battery 20kg, tanks and water 200kg, occupants 210kg), puts slide-ons at 380–750kg, warns an axle limit can be exceeded even inside GVM, and states that camper-trailer makers must plate permissible loaded weights while slide-on makers need not. Trayon has built slide-ons since 1994 (1,000th unit April 2017), lists 390kg (dual-wide) and 410kg (single/extra cab) starting weights, estimates 600–650kg loaded, is Certified Australian Made with a 10-year structural warranty, main models at $46,000. Wedgetail, founded 2008 and built at its Newcastle HQ, lists the 22 at 580kg GTM / 750kg GVM at $61,629, the HT at 570kg GTM, the WTC 420kg basic to 710kg fitted at $77,990. Travelander's Evron series: DC1 360kg from $24,000, SC1 400kg from $24,900, DC2 580kg from $32,500, SC2 670kg from $33,000 — the upgrade list is the weight. Lance lists the 650 at 1,813lb dry (≈822kg) and the 1172 at 4,063lb dry / 4,517lb wet (≈1,843kg / ≈2,049kg) — built for American one-tonne pickups with far greater payload. Rear overhang is the lesser of 60% of wheelbase or 3.7m from the rear axle centre, in every state and territory except WA; load restraint is governed by the NTC Load Restraint Guide 2018 for Light Vehicles. Pre-registration GVM upgrades are certified under federal Second Stage Manufacturer approval, with a new compliance plate and nationwide recognition; post-registration upgrades are certified under state rules and may need re-certification if re-registered interstate. In NSW Highway Patrol mobile weighing in late 2023, about 40% of caravans and camper trailers checked were over ATM, 36% of rigs had the tow vehicle over GVM and 18% over GCM — towing rigs, not slide-ons; no equivalent slide-on study was found.
DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT purchasing, legal, engineering, compliance or insurance advice, and not advice about your vehicle or your rig. No manufacturer, importer, dealer or builder named here is accused of any wrongdoing, and no product is described as unsafe, defective or non-compliant; the imported campers discussed are correctly built for the vehicles they were designed for. Weights and prices are as published or advertised at the time of research, indicative, and vary — confirm every figure with the builder and read your own compliance plate. Overhang, modification and GVM-upgrade rules differ by state and change; get the current answer from your road authority and a qualified engineer before you spend anything. Insurance policies differ: read your own product disclosure statement on overloading and roadworthiness.
