Description
Tricolor's $800 million fraud scandal exposed a massive Wall Street banking failure involving JPMorgan, fake car loans, and a collapsing subprime auto lender.
In 2025, Tricolor Holdings, a billion-dollar used car dealership and auto finance company, collapsed after lenders discovered an estimated $800 million gap in the collateral backing its loans.
For years, some of America's largest financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Fifth Third Bank, Barclays, Credit Suisse, and BlackRock, had helped finance Tricolor's rapid expansion.
But according to federal prosecutors, behind the company's success was an elaborate financial fraud involving double-pledged auto loans, falsified financial records, nonexistent vehicles, and collateral pledged to multiple lenders.
At the centre was Tricolor founder Daniel Chu, a businessman who built his company around providing affordable financing to underserved borrowers.
As the financial scheme began to unravel, secretly recorded conversations revealed executives discussing misleading lenders, covering up discrepancies, and even invoking Enron to gain leverage over the banks.
By September 2025, Tricolor had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. More than a thousand employees faced unpaid leave, customers were left stranded, and major Wall Street banks faced hundreds of millions in losses.
But the most disturbing part of the Tricolor scandal wasn't how complicated the fraud was.
It was how simple the deception had been.
And how long it took someone to notice.
In this Power & Ruin business documentary, we investigate the rise and collapse of Tricolor Holdings, the allegations against Daniel Chu, the failures of Wall Street's lending oversight, and the financial engineering that allowed one company to borrow against the same assets repeatedly.
This documentary explores:
- The rise and bankruptcy of Tricolor Holdings
- How the alleged $800 million collateral fraud worked
- JPMorgan Chase and Wall Street's exposure to subprime auto loans
- Double-pledging, fake vehicle identification numbers, and asset-backed securities
- Daniel Chu's recorded conversations and federal criminal charges
- The role of auditors, banks, and financial regulators
- How a junior analyst uncovered what major institutions had missed
Daniel Chu has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges against him. Allegations against him remain unproven in court.
