Description
This remarkable sculpture, known as the Fasting Buddha, portrays Siddhartha Gautama during his period of extreme asceticism.
The head was found near Rawalpindi, in present-day Pakistan, and is generally dated to around the 2nd to 3rd century CE, during the Kushan period when Gandhara was an important center of Buddhist art.
Its sunken cheeks, deeply recessed eyes and prominently modeled veins create an unusually realistic depiction of a body weakened by severe fasting.
According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha practiced extreme austerities before realizing that excessive self-denial was not the path to enlightenment. He eventually abandoned these practices and embraced the Middle Way, avoiding both extreme indulgence and extreme self-mortification.
The sculpture therefore represents more than physical suffering. It captures an important episode in Siddhartha's journey that became closely connected with one of the central ideas of Buddhist philosophy.
