Description

On the morning of October 14th, 1952, a rural mail carrier named Arvid Halonen came around a bend on a gravel road in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and saw something standing in the cedars across the Firesteel River. Taller than the spruce beside it. Watching his car. The next morning, it was there again. And the next. For thirty years, almost every morning, it was waiting at that bend. He wrote every one of those mornings down in a small notebook in his glove box. One spring, he lifted two fingers off the steering wheel to say hello. Seven weeks later, it lifted its hand back. On his last day on the route in December 1982, it wasn't standing by the river. It had left him something instead: an envelope in the handwriting of his wife, who had been dead for almost six years. He had never seen that letter before. This account comes from Arvid's son, who found thirty years of notebooks in a cigar box, and an old mailbox wrapped in a blanket in the garage rafters, with the letter still sealed inside. Some names and details have been changed. 🌲 Subscribe to Quiet Woods Archive, so the next story finds you.
