Description

In September 1962, a state trapper on Mount Hood checked a culvert trap set for a nuisance bear. It wasn't a bear. Within days, a man from Washington, D.C. had it moved in secret to a locked winter building at the Portland zoo, while arrangements were made to ship it east. Only one keeper could get near it: 24-year-old Clara Dahl. For nine days, it refused to eat. Not fruit, not meat, not fish, not honey. The vet gave it two weeks. Then one night, sitting alone in the dark, Clara began to sing the old Norwegian lullaby her grandmother used to sing to her on a homestead at the foot of Mount Hood. It turned around. From that night on, it would eat only while she sang that song. And then, one night, it hummed back a verse she had never heard before. This account comes from Clara's son, who found her keeper's notebook from that autumn and a cassette tape labeled "Mormor's song. Both verses. For the woods." Some names have been changed. 🌲 Subscribe to Quiet Woods Archive, so the next story finds you.
