Description

In 1921, Ada Blackjack traveled to the remote Wrangel Island in the Arctic as a seamstress for an expedition. She expected to stay for a short time and return home to her son. But the rescue ship never came. As supplies disappeared and the Arctic winter returned, the expedition slowly fell apart. Three men left the island searching for help and were never seen again. Lorne Knight became seriously ill and eventually died. And Ada Blackjack was left behind... alone on one of the most isolated islands on Earth. She had almost no experience with hunting or Arctic survival. But she had no choice. Ada taught herself to use a rifle, hunted birds, trapped foxes, collected eggs, built and repaired her camp, made a skin boat for seal hunting, protected herself from polar bears, and somehow survived the brutal Arctic conditions. For months, there was no other human being around her. Only snow. Sea ice. Wind. Silence. And her small cat, Vic. Then, on August 20, 1923, something appeared through the Arctic fog... A ship. Ada had survived nearly two years on Wrangel Island. But the most remarkable part of her story wasn't simply that she survived. She had gone there for one reason: to earn enough money to bring her son Bennett home. And after everything she endured, that remained the thing that mattered most. Ada Blackjack's story is a true historical survival story of isolation, courage, loss, survival, and the human will to return home.
