Description
Hidden in Tennessee’s Cumberland Mountains, Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was designed to be extraordinarily difficult to escape. Prisoners mined coal, quarried stone, and even helped construct parts of the prison itself. Then in 1977, its most infamous inmate—James Earl Ray—went over the wall with six other prisoners. Today, the former maximum-security prison has taken another strange turn: it’s a tourist attraction.
