Description

In 1875, the HMS Challenger — the world's first true oceanographic research ship — hauled up two enormous fossilized teeth from a depth of over 14,000 feet in the South Pacific, teeth that could only have belonged to Otodus megalodon, the largest predatory shark that ever lived. The find sat quietly in museum collections until 1959, when zoologist Wladimir Tschernezky measured the manganese crust that had built up on them and calculated ages of just 11,300 and 24,000 years — suggesting megalodon had been alive while humans walked the Earth. The claim electrified the public and gave birth to decades of speculation that the 60-foot giant might still lurk in the unexplored deep. But the dating was badly flawed: manganese accumulates at wildly inconsistent rates, and teeth can be buried, exposed, and reburied across millions of years, making the crust useless as a clock. Modern science places megalodon's extinction around 3.6 million years ago — yet the Challenger teeth remain the fossil that launched one of the ocean's most enduring legends.
